sister brother and barcelona

all one color

when i got home from fashion school, my grandma sat me down and grilled me. first question of course was "what are the latest fashions?" Am i supposed to know the answer? I think what you're supposed to learn at Saint Martins is to not participate in latest and greatest, but that entails knowing them in order to avoid. Or maybe thats what you're supposed to learn at Brown? Regardless, I've decided that my own latest style watch in on monochrome. I want the world in all one color:

medicine vs. fashion

i guess these women didn't have to choose! they're swaddled in a mine for arthritis treatment and looking fab. More and more i realize how much my mom the doctor comes in handy in for family and others in the business of keeping people alive and healthy. What will i do for my kids? Is fashion VITAL? are we- the designers, the wearers, the lovers- worth it? Will i even be doing fashion once I have said kids?

bright eyed little fashion student

Last week i went to my first fashion show and then my second. The CSM BA press show -- could have been my future had i not chosen liberal arts, but thats another can of fashion worms-- was the first and foremost. After having spent the month before working for the inspiring Scott Arnold in the womenswear room, seeing all the best/most press-showy collections in one place was an exciting event to say the least. All the nay-sayers can say nay to the spectacular knitwear and the extreme print. They can call menswear unoriginal or the winners undeserving, but I truly don't see the point.  This whole year I've been worried about being less experienced, less versed in the discourse of fashion, but when it comes to showtime I think I'm at an advantage. Everything awed my catwalk virgin eyes, from the thumping music to the stilts that closed the show.  Like my parents after a high school play (if the play were amazing and filled with glamorous onlookers), I left with a feeling of euphoria that drowned out my classmates' post-show doubts. While I find the convention of The Fashion Show a bit excessive and distancing to the clothes themselves when I sit in my little room and think about it, once there I realized that it kind of is what its all about. But is it better to be overly critical or overly accepting? Cynical or naive? Regardless, here are some of my favorites from CSM .

marry me sophie calle

For  my newest and lastest project, thanks to a trip to the tate modern's new exhibition, i have been looking at artists who construct and archive personal mythologies. Sophie Calle does this through objects and artifacts/nostalgic memorabilia which belong to her or those she has found. One piece I particularly like is a pre-Amelie project she did for a newspaper in which Calle found a man's address book and then spent a month calling everyone in it besides the owner himself to get to know him. Based on the character she discovered (as seen above), she likes him. This is fascinating on many levels, first of which is the dated basis of the investigation: the address book. What is the contemporary equivalent? Facebook password? Cell phone via mass text? Could all of your facebook friends help a  stranger find out about your deep character and construct a personhood for you? I wonder what is at stake in the individual's identity in these questions. With no hard manifestation of your network, does your self (according to others) become weakened? Its getting existential in here.
